Celebrating our Volunteers

My name is Maryann Chioma Eze and I joined Healthwatch Coventry as a volunteer around six months ago.

If I am honest, my initial motivation was practical. I wanted to develop my communication skills and gain experience engaging with people from different walks of life. But something shifted quite quickly. Once I was out in the community, sitting with people and genuinely listening to their experiences of health and social care, I realised this was about something much bigger than my own development.

What drew me in and keeps me coming back is the belief that every person deserves to be heard, regardless of their background, race, or ethnicity. So many people feel unheard when it comes to the services that affect their lives most. Being part of an organisation that amplifies those voices, takes their experiences seriously, and uses them to push for real change feels genuinely meaningful to me.

As someone currently studying for an MSc in Health Promotion and Public Health, volunteering with Healthwatch Coventry has connected my academic work to lived reality in a way no classroom ever could. I came to build a skill. I stayed because I found a purpose.
